Apple’s Secret Weapon for iPhone 12

by birtanpublished on November 26, 2020

Okay i could tell how many of you were upset when i informed you about the smaller battery capacities that seemed to be pretty legitimate as a leak now all of you were thinking let's just skip the iphone 12 this year if the batteries are getting smaller things must be getting pretty bad who cares about a slightly better cpu what's that going to allow for but in today's video we're going to be diving into why the a14 chip has to be good and why power efficiency matters much more than better performance let's

Do begin really click on a video about an apple sheep talking about a system on chip what's what's wrong with you guys quarantine's really hitting you hard but essentially the a14 chip is meant to be the most affordable and yet at the same time most powerful mobile processor we've ever seen in a smartphone the exciting part is knowing that it's going to be available in even the smallest 5.4 inch iphone 12 all the way up to the 6.7 inch 12 pro max and i think the reason apple is

Finally able to make an iphone this small with a battery capacity that low and still have somewhat decent battery life and in today's video i'm going to just go ahead and put my foot down wild probably incorrect drew speculation i don't think the iphone 12s are gonna have worse battery life than the iphone 11s because of the increased power efficiencies we'll have from this first five nanometer chip design that we're hearing about from

Fabrication plans from tsmc the a14 ship is supposed to be able to consume 30 less power than apple's a 13 chip okay so a 30 boost in power efficiency means that yeah that's actually pretty substantial and you could have much smaller batteries within the iphones themselves and that can allow for sustained battery life if anything perhaps even a little bit better worst case scenarios comparing the batteries we have in our iphone 11s to the rumored battery

Capacities of the iphone 12s worst case scenario is about 11 smaller which means that essentially the better the power efficiency on the a14 chip the more battery capacity you can take out of the iphone 12 and still get the same amount of battery life or if anything a little bit better i'm still somewhat upset about this because i would have been excited to see a system on chip that was 30 you know less power consumption but with the same batteries we had before because then

We could just have an insane amount of battery life and get way more than before but the same amount is fine too i guess if you want to make the design thinner and lighter and everything i guess i understand why they don't want to do that but when it comes to performance gains we should expect around 15 percent improvement on what's already one of the most powerful chips in a smartphone today that you can get on a 400 se yeah they want to top that even

Further what exactly that's going to allow for i imagine it having a lot to do with camera performance you know we saw those leaks earlier in the year about the next generation iphones being able to record 4k at 120 fps maybe even 240 fps so you get those extra rich and sharp slow-mo shots though why the heck can slo-mo on the iphone never focus anytime you activate slow-mo mode it forgets like how to focus apple just fix that first okay i don't want to have to keep

Tapping the screen every time we activate it but also with the accommodation of lidar on the iphone 12 pro i could totally see apple trying to enhance the capabilities of portrait mode maybe even bringing it to somewhat of a video supported mode so that you could have those great bokeh shots in that great motion blur behind your subjects but at the same time record like a decently looking video so it seems like you shot it on a dslr even though you really didn't

I know i've seen that done on other smartphones in the past but it's definitely not perfected it's not ironed out yet and apple likes to do things right instead of first so i could totally see them waiting on this and being like okay now thanks to the performance gains of the a14 chip we can finally do it this year but at the same time yeah you should also expect some gaming enhancements as well as faster exporting times if you're the kind of person to edit video on your phone we've even seen some leaked images of the a14

Chip because this time of the year it's kind of inevitable it has to be in mass production it's already being built right now and while i wouldn't trust any geekbench results that you may see floating around the internet of the a14 chip it's not insane to imagine that you should expect performance that in the single core department could beat that of the a12z chip and probably match in multi-core scores of that cpu that we've had on the ipad pro which is basically the same

As the 2018 chip that we had on the initial third generation ipad pros but still that cpu and gpu blew everybody out of the water there's never been an arm chip as powerful as that one and consumer grade products and knowing that the iphone cpu could top that this year is really really exciting i'm pumped to see what devices they end up bringing that chip to and of course the inevitable upgrade of the a14x chip which is the type of

Cpu and gpu power we're expecting and hoping to see inside those next generation apple silicon based max you know if we're currently able to put that two-year-old a12z chip into a dev kit mac mini and edit 4k video and everything in final cut off of that can you imagine what would be capable with the next generation processors with that five nanometer design all those power efficiencies as well can you imagine the benefited battery life on the macbooks in that case

The potential is endless knowing that the apple silicon team is going to be expanding into different lineups out there and i think the a14 chip is going to be a great turning point to once again you know unsurprisingly make sure the iphone has the best mobile processor available in any phone available while at the same time knowing those processors will be capable on apple hardware and it can only get better on whatever they're putting in the silicon based max because they're likely going to have

Even more cores and more power to work with larger batteries and everything so it sounds really really promising and i've said this many times but i get the question over and over again so i'll repeat it for you for all those people in the back if you're in the market for a mac and you can't afford to wait you need it for school you need it for work right now then it's not the end of the world okay just try to find yourself a good deal at least on a current day macbook but if you can't afford to wait if your current

Mac is fine but you can keep using it for a few more months please do because if you're capable of waiting for the silicon-based max coming out at the end of this year i think the wait will be worth it i think the performance gains will be huge and you'll be able to do all kinds of stuff on a really thin light powerful macbook the good news for those of you wanting more iphone 12 information in today's video is that sounds like through the added

Performance and power efficiency gains of the a14 chip you should expect the battery life on these next gen iphones to be okay all right it's not the end of the world and that's the beauty of not just prioritizing performance but also understanding that as there's lots of people that like different types of iphones whether it's a small one whether it's a big one investing heavily into that chip design and making it consume less power is a win for all and it also allows apple to make flagships at smaller footprints than they ever could before which i think a

Lot of people are going to be excited for in fact with that lower price point i might even say there could be a resurgence of people who like smaller phones if they're able to get you know 5g the most powerful processor in a phone all those great camera features and still an oled display and face id for 650 even if it's 700 i still think that's going to be a steal compared to what android phone you would have to buy to get 5g the powerful snapdragon 865 plus even then you're probably looking well over 800 dollars

In that department and even if you did want all those performance gains you'd probably have to put up with a much larger display than a lot of people are comfortable with but what do you guys think is gonna happen with the a14 chip should we expect battery life to be the same or better feel free to hit me up over on twitter join my discord let's chat more about it there this is your apple sheep here i'll see you in the next
