Apple Watch Series 4 Review

This is least for mobile tech review and it's time for our Apple watch series for review this time it's got a little bit more expensive than last year it starts at 399 for the 40 millimeter and the 44 millimeter is $30 more for 29 and then there's the LT model just like there was last year LTE is gonna have at $100 onto the price range so nothing too different from normal there the stainless steel model is still considerably more expensive starting around $700 and which isn't something I recommend unless you really have the money to spend and you don't intend to upgrade every year or so because that gets expensive right but in

This jewelry that is up to you what is interesting this time is that the watch has gotten bigger the face has gotten bigger while the watch itself has gotten thinner and more comfortable those are both really nice things there's other improvements we're gonna look at it now so just like last year like I said you have your choice between the aluminum formerly called the sport model and the stainless steel there is no Apple watch edition this year with a frou-frou high-end material like ceramics so yeah say goodbye to that gonna be more friendly for your wallet

So not such a bad thing new for this here at least as far as I know I haven't seen this before Apple has a watch trading program people an Apple watch from them previously they will offer to do a trade-in and you get a little over a half of the money back for what he paid new for the previous model so you had a series 3 LTE watch like I did I'll give you 225 for the smaller model if you send it back in which saves you from putting it up for sale and swap or Craigslist or something like that takes a little the pain out of it it's available in three colors to match the

IPhones which is what they usually do so you have Space Gray which is almost black you have silver and you have gold which is pretty much like the gold on the iPhone finish which is kind of a a brassy finish it's nice looking it's not too gaudy or blingy looking the most exciting thing here to me is the bigger watch face who knew that 2 millimeters can make such a difference we went from 38 and 42 million millimeter to now 40 and 44 millimeter without really making the watch any bigger because it's more of an edge to edge display now that whole OLED thing going on where they can

Go pretty much close to edge to edge on the screen 15% is actually noticeable it's a tiny watch face yes but now the touch targets like if you're unlocking and something like the punch in your PIN code easier to do if are consuming content on the launch which is what is designed to do right you want to read quick news headlines look at a picture or something like that it's easier and more enjoyable to actually look at that stuff so kudos to Apple for making a bigger watch face without making a big bulky watch out of

It that's some of the selling points for the Apple watch is in general they are more petite than many of the smart watches on the market be it Android or Samsung's gear family of watches with some of which can be really big metal honkers like they just think everybody is a big burly man so for those who are not big burly people this is a very pleasant watch to wear and like I said the thinner design with a complete ceramic back now and they say that's improved reception and also I bet because they have more sensors for the heart going on in the back now it lays

Flatter it's more comfortable where it's sometimes it would move and shift a wedge a little bit on my boning wrist now it just lays really nice and flat and just don't even notice it's there which means I can wear the band even snugger which is always a desirable thing particularly if you are using it for the fitness features when it comes to the fitness features they've always been quite good they've added a couple of new workouts for watch OS 5 on board here so you have hiking you have yoga for example now and the the sensors do get better every year there were a

Couple of workouts that still always baffled the heart rate monitor at least for me if I was using the wrong machine at the gym for example or the Nautilus machines they would always just go in and not come up with the reading or I say something absolutely silly so now it manages that better of course what's been in the news are some new things that they're doing so they've got the false answer here so this has helped me I'm fallen and I can't get a moment right so I hear that that's actually enabled automatically if you're over 65 and they have health data about you and

You already know this because you set up a previous watch I am not nearly over 65 despite what you might now think so it was not automatically enabled for me I did turn it on and I did much throwing myself on to the couch flailing of arms and I could not force it to accidentally trigger which is a good thing because if you do have it enabled it can notify your emergency contact and also call 9-1-1 automatically for you in fact if you haven't moved for a minute after your fallen clearly this is probably designed for those of you who are working up on ladders and more dangerous

Jobs and I work in for a living or if you're older and you know the usual I fell down I can't get up I need some help kind of thing so this is really the the future probably of smartwatches of all kinds so you're gonna have more and more health monitoring and they're going to have more safety features on board the other one is the EKG or ECG as Apple calls it stands for the same thing electrocardiogram so what it can do in a future OS update because it's not ready yet you can't do this today yet is actually do a EKG from your wrist save it as a PDF and it's printable too so

What's the use of this besides making you neurotic about your health well for those who who do have arrhythmias or occasional palpitations you know that they come and they go so when you go to the doctor's office it's never when it's going to happen so otherwise the doctor has to set you up with this monitoring system set you home for a week hope it happens then so this is a new more consumer friendly way of doing or a more affordable way of monitoring it now what it's going to do is basically detect afib which is one of the most serious forms of heart arrhythmia it's not super

Common the other more common times by gemenese try gemenese things like that I don't believe it's going to detect those but those are generally not life-threatening and they're just more of annoyances so some people think that this is just going to result in more people running to their doctor's office and the panic other people think it's going to be helpful we're just gonna have to see how it rolls out but like I said I think this is going to be the future of wearable products that they are going to monitor us and they're going to get more effective and

Efficient at doing that so that they will be useful well the display itself got bigger and it's still OLED and it's still very viewable outdoors and a lovely thing with haptic feedback if you press and hold on the screen and all that sort of thing the glass covering as far as I know has stayed the same which is okay because the original generation Apple watch was pretty easy to scratch especially if you didn't go for the higher and stainless model that had a better glass covering on it we're starting with the series three it got to

Be pretty durable so the everyday average bangs and whoopsies really I'm not left marks on my watch my original generation watch like pretty sad just from the usual oops I banged it into the side of the hallway moving aside for a co-worker that sort of thing really never fazed my series three I don't expect it's gonna do any damage than the series four I there's a fairly durable product just like with series three you can go ahead and swim with this you can swim in a pool you can swim in the ocean salt water is safe you can shower with it

After you've worked out like I do and here in sweaty Texas good thing that speaking of workouts it has automatic workout detection and end of workout detection do which is great because at the gym I do a series of different kinds of exercises invariably I forget to tell my watch I've started one of these kinds of exercise types like say weightlifting it'll figure it out for you weightlifting maybe not so much but anything that involves a more aerobic activity like running treadmill biking you get the idea rowing machine it'll detect it and will also remind you if

You have finished your workout because about 20 percent of the time I go running to the shower and absolutely forget to tell it I'm ended the workout it has a new faster s4 processor inside now the original generation Apple watch was sluggish and underpowered but with starting with Series three it felt pretty snappy I can't say that I noticed the difference that much it just enables some of the more advanced features from monitoring and cluding the new complicated complicated watch faces they have the new info graph which has this like an artist squeezed every paint

Color out of the tube they've just got colors everywhere and up to eight complications which is pretty darn complicated for those of you don't have an Apple watch complication means a snippet of info whether it's the weather or stocks or your heart rate that's sort of thing so you can go all the info junkie on this or you can use one they're nifty new fire or vapor watch faces or anything you want including one of your photos unfortunately we still don't have any ambient displays or always-on displays here given the fact that the

Battery life is actually a bit improved vs. series 3 in the previous generations that's kind of a shame I mean I've gotten used to actually not seeing anything on my watch my smart watches until I lift them up but it would be nice at some point they did they claim 18 hours of general use and that's actually use not sitting on the desk doing absolutely nothing or six hours of workout time now god Bless You marathoners if you're actually exercising for six hours every single day what that comes down to is still it's a product that I charge every night

When I go to bed open the nightstand I charge up it probably could go two days including an hour of exercise each day which I generally do do but just to be safe I charge it every night there are fitness trackers out there obviously that have better battery life they're doing less of the smart stuff they don't have LTE radios all that sort of thing but this is the state of smartwatches right now for those who were using a Dick Tracy style to have conversations they have moved the microphones farther from the speaker so there's less echo and

Feedback that's appreciated speaking of being Dick Tracy and talking to your watch you can also now just lift the watch to your mouth and ask Siri a question you don't have to preface it with hey Siri anymore speaking of Siri and having conversations with your watch or with other people the speaker is now louder too so it's about equivalent to well to make it as loud as the series 3 I have to drop it down two notches on volume so it's significantly louder therefore those who do use this for phone conversations and noise hear places that will float your

Boat so here we go should you upgrade if you have a Series three mm-hmm you know it's it's nice the bigger watch face particularly is nice if you're into the new heart rate monitoring kind of stuff that's fine too it's not like oh yeah you must do this stuff but if you have an original generation still or a series two then definitely you'll notice the speed improvement you'll notice the bigger watch pace it a whole lot of things the more comfortable fit all those sort of things certainly will add up and if you're an Apple user well it's pretty much the best choice out there

For an Apple watch but that said it's still one of the best smart watches on the market – I'm Lisa from mobile tech review be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more cool tech videos and thumbs up if you like this vid
