Aorus 17 – A Mechanical Keyboard On A Gaming Notebook!

by birtanpublished on April 6, 2021

hello good people on me tree here in Japan what an awesome opportunity it is to come to factory witness the entire manufacturing process and the production behind mechanical switches and before I get into those this is the Auris 17 the next-generation gaming notebook that incorporates a lot of card design a lot of gamer e aesthetic a lot of hardware improvements but what makes this notebook so special is the new Omron mechanical switch the B 3kl we've done a full in-depth video on how those switches are made which is super interesting make sure to check out that

Video but now let's talk about the aura 17 huge thanks to gigabyte and Imran for sponsoring this trip in this video so the exterior design is quite interesting pretty much like a lot of other gaming notebooks and gigabyte says that it is inspired by the lines of fighter jets and you can see that in some aspects of course there is RGB illumination vents on the back which sort of look like car brake lights and also some areas in the front – I especially like this approach because we have a little bit of reflective elements on the surface on where the notebook is placed gives you a

Little bit of visual variety and also we have that kind of cool pattern right below the webcam in the center at the back below the screen so let's talk about the pricing as the entire Oris lineup very significantly based on your hardware so the entry specs is the 97 58 GTX 16 60 TI 16 gigs of dual channel memory 512 gigabyte nvme SSD and a 120 Hertz calibrated display which is super cool which is Pantone certified IPS display and that's gonna run you about $1,800 pretty competitive for a 17 inch notebook and of course given the size of notebook you can go all the way up to

Full desktop replacement hardware with I 999 HK desktop-class RTX 2080 32 gigabytes of memory one terabyte nvme SSD 2 terabyte hard drive and 240 Hertz display and that configuration is pretty expensive moving away from the price a lot of gamers and creators have been asking for something and that is to include an internal MUX inside a notebook and that allows you to switch off discrete graphics cards to just only work off the integrated graphics on CPU to improve battery life and especially that is something that I would definitely take advantage of when

I don't need the power of the r-tx or the gtx cards gigabyte is also including an ESS saber docked inside which would allow the or 17 to power high-end headphones like the HD 6 XX require a lot of impedance make sure to check out that video on headphones and we also have stereo speakers at 2 watts and a built-in subwoofer at 3 watts and yeah this thing is loud and bass it's good the cooling system is interesting too under the hood so it's called wind force infinity it uses a really large vapor chamber a ton of vents and thick fans are supposed to act together to cut down

On the noise and it also increases thermal efficiency by about 37 percent over the previous design and while those fans need a lot of vertical space as you can see or is use that to give the design a sloped shape this gives you a bit more comfortable and ergonomic typing and gaming position and speaking of typing let's get to this wonderful keyboard so this one uses the omron b3 KL low profile mechanical switches we cover them in the previous video and they are the real star of the show the switches are clicky so blue type instead of your linear Reds or tactile Browns

And even though we have that beautiful clicking sensation the switches are actually surprisingly quiet even though these switches are only 6 millimeter high they have 2.5 millimeter of key travel which is nice and 1.6 member actuation points so there's a good amount of key travel for a notebook keyboard which are rated for 15 million clicks and they've been added to the or 17 right now because of the low profile nature that could be added in the future to their thinner low profile notebooks from Horace and gigabyte – and one of the main

Challenges when it comes to low profile switches has been stabilization unlike the actual key wobbling which has been kind of present in many low profile switches in the past Omron has eliminated that by adding the stabilizers the butterfly stabilizers on the side that completely eliminates the wobble and they feel quite nice so now that you heard the sound test my opinion is that these switches have a really nice travel distance something that I was not expecting even though this is not a low-profile notebook itself I feel like the keyboard design

And the keyboard shell itself is quite thin could be integrated easily into the thinner profiles that will give you so much travel distance that you would not normally find anywhere on a low-profile notebook as for the click itself I'm impressed at the sensation that you have while typing on it it's quite distinct and they're not loud at all so for like a office environment or an airport environment I was editing something with my mouse and that was super loud and just coming to and typing on the clicky switch on a notebook that has been the most impressive part the sound profile

Is both quiet and also quite satisfactory they D balance quite fast so you don't have to worry about leaving your finger on there and getting stuck like it has gotten stuck on other Blu mechanical switches like MX blues for example but here because the travel distance is quite short at one point six millimeters that means that you could very well game on this thing and perform really fast actuations like you would on a linear switch but here you have that audible and clicky sensation I think many people who enjoy browns would appreciate this and people who love

Blues will love this one too another cool fact is the B three key else which is using a centered mounted RGB LED with this concentric diffusion panel on the button itself so the lighting is very even and bright on each key even when there's characters that are not centered and gigabyte also added a metal plate under the keyboard so it doesn't flex if you type like Mike yeah that felt satisfying to the key caps on this notebook are injected molded abs with a soft touch finish and laser engraving and the key material is especially made and designed to diffuse that light

Even further so guys I'm really excited to get this or 17 notebook in hand I'm personally using the razorblade 17 right now and I just loved a large form factor even though it's not very user friendly to travel the screen real estate the faster refresh is awesome and by the way the trackpad on the aura 17 is the best one I've tried for course so far it's like Mac Book level razor blade 15 level quality it's awesome and I'm just really excited to test out the performance of the hardware given the new vapor chamber cooling design so yeah make sure to stay tuned for that and

It's just so cool to see the production of the switch and its integration of the switch like this is the literally the first product that Imran has seen the b3 key L to be integrated and it's nice to be part of the process to explore how you know from the fruition into integration and yeah so stay tuned for the full video on the or 17 when that comes out thanks so much for watching I'm Dmitry Mike's behind the camera from Japan I'll talk to you guys in the next video
