Alienware m15 R3 Review

by birtanpublished on November 6, 2020

Hi i'm matthew buzzy here with the alienware m15 r3 the 2020 update to the m15r2 that we saw last year it's mostly the same exterior uh design-wise you're getting the same sort of sci-fi look with the text and the ringed led in the back as well as the white sort of standout finish and the rgb keyboard which i do like a lot i think it's unique in a field of laptops that look really similar this one kind of stands out given that it's the same on the outside it's more about the component refreshes

And the feature updates that have gone into this year's model the starting price for this laptop is 1500 our review configuration is 2160 so it's a bit more expensive than that making it a distinctly high-end laptop though there are mid-range configurations for this laptop that means we're comparing it to other premium laptops through the cream of the crop but uh 2160 is actually one of the better values at that price range um because for that price you get a 10th generation intel core i7 cpu

16 gigs of ram uh it's a one terabyte ssd which is actually two 512 ssds that are in raid 0 configuration to show up as one drive um an nvidia geforce rtx 2070 gpu which is good it's not the max q version so it is a bit more power than the two down alternatives um though it is not the super gpu that have been showing up in some models additionally this display which is a full hd resolution is 300hz so that's a super high refresh rate um for those playing triple-a games that

Probably won't come into effect that much if you're a big-budget single-player titles those games are not going to run full settings at 300 frames per second but for those people who are into competitive multiplayer titles um those are the sorts of games where not only are higher frames possible because there are less visually demanding games but those frame rates can actually benefit you if you see you know slightly higher refresh rates than the people you're playing against you might see the action just

That much sooner which can give you an edge so that's sort of who this is for esports hounds and people who really are into competitive gaming not all games are going to push up to 300 frames per second of course but um we tested games like rainbow six siege and that got into the 200s uh close to 300 so you can definitely um push that if you set sort of lower settings which is a common practice for playing multiplayer games because it allows you to pump those higher frame rates to give

You that edge now as for those big budget single player titles this laptop did average just over 100 frames per second so that's pretty good performance um i think not being the max q version of this gpu give it that extra step and it's actually competing with laptops that have the max2080 gpu so it's really close and a lot of those cost several hundred dollars more than this so um it hung at or above the same average

Frame rates as laptops that are more expensive or about just as expensive so uh it's really good performance considering the price i know it sounds high it is high it's a higher end laptop but in that field it's actually one of the less expensive for the same performance level so all that said about its performance let's move on to the portability and sort of physical aspect of this laptop it is a bit heavier than maybe you'd want it's

4.65 pounds it's a little heavier than some gaming laptops but it's right on par with other machines like the razer blade 15s actually slightly lighter um some zephyrus laptops are right in the same ballpark so uh to get that much power into it being under five pounds at that point is is pretty good that's sort of the benchmark and the closer you can get the four pads flat all the better um only small laptops or 14 inch laptops will be four or under so um in the in the grand

Scheme it's portable enough um it might get a little heavy to bring on your daily commute the other thing that limits its portability to a degree is the battery life it ran for 2 hours and 40 minutes on our rundown test which is unfortunately on the lower side um gaming laptops notorious in the past for their short battery life have really improved a long way in recent years a lot of laptops we tested that we compared this to ran for six or seven hours so

Just under three is is not great um i ran a test to make sure that's what it was getting and that's roughly what it landed on every time it is a calm but i'm not gonna dig it too hard since you're gonna be playing games on the charger and plugged in and you can use it at your destination where it won't be too hard to carry with you even if you don't use it the whole time you're traveling to your destination so a con but not a deal breaker in this category of laptop rounding out the physical build on this

Laptop are the ports there are three standard usb a ports a micro sd card slot a usb c port with thunderbolt 3 there's an ethernet jack which is a nice inclusion at this size an hdmi connection mini display port and there's also a proprietary connection for alienware's external graphics amplifier which obviously sold separately if you want to put a gpu in that enclosure uh and connect it to power this you can do that but laptop this powerful

You're not going to get that much better performance over over an external disclosure so probably wouldn't go that route with this laptop but the option is there if you already own that egpu so with all that said there's a lot to like about this laptop and the only real con is the battery life um i like the design i think it's standout it may not be everyone's liking but it is fun to me it's not the garage written black design of all that scream gaming laptop but it kind of lets you know it's a gaming

Laptop it's fun it's white it's uh it's got some styling it's it's different but i don't think it's ugly and i think that's all about execution the asus rg zephyrus s gx502 has been our editor's choice for the sort of 2000 to 2900 laptop range for the past year so and this takes the crown off it this is our new top pick in this price tier it offers similar performance to that laptop uh if not better in most cases for slightly less money

It adds a 300 hertz display i do like the design more myself um so it's hard to argue with that sort of offering um you could maybe like the razer blade 15's all metal build more but you do have to pay out for it so this is the best combination of power performance uh price in this in this category and for that it earns our editor's choice and a four and a half star rating you
