Acer Predator Helios 500 Review

This is Lisa from mobile tech review and this is eight point eight pounds or four kilograms of high-end gaming laptop really you don't have to go the gym if you have this thing this is the Acer predator Helios 500 we have looked at the 300 series which is more affordable we've looked at predators of old and now we have the predator helios starts around $2,000 and so with the core i7 six core CPU and nvidia gtx 1070 graphics we have the higher-end model which has a core i 9 inside Yummie six core at that and so no matter what you do with this series you're gonna get gtx 1070 graphics inside there's also an AMD

Rise in seven options who will talk about that as well so our high-end model right here is $2,500 this is a list price one nice thing about ACR gaming laptops is you'll often find them for considerably less at retailers and the AMD Rison model is $21.99 we're gonna look at it now so some of you might lament the fact that there is no 4k display option here Alienware it does do that with the Alienware 17 msi even has 4k displays this one just goes with that 1080p display all day all night done and no GJ x 1080 option for this high-end laptop even though you can go to a court

I 9 which is interesting which is a little bit odd but it's a very confident GPU next to the fastest that's available right now interestingly enough when it comes to power supplies we'll talk about what power supply you get with this even though it has a gtx 1070 these are Intel eighth generation CPUs inside if you go with e2 Intel models that are available so six core CPU whether it's a core i7 dish 8750 H or the overclockable 8950 HK CPU if you go for the AMD option is that Rison 7 with RX Vega 56 graphics inside again that's a 21 99-mile priced in between the two Intel options that are

Available with Nvidia graphics it has four Ram slots it ships the matter which model you choose with ddr4 Ram and it has two RAM modules in two of the inaccessible are not easily accessible slots there are four slots total to you're gonna have to take this thing apart completely to get to those two slots that up to 8 gig modules ddr4 again there are two exposed modules so you could pretty easily bring that Ram back up obviously you've got a maximum of 64 gigs using 16 gig modules and ETV games become more prevalent and less insanely expensive even Heiner it has a

Boot PCIe nvme SSD inside and also a one or two terabyte hard drive depending on which configuration you go with interestingly the Rison option has that boot SSD but it doesn't have a hard drive according to a series website you could of course add one later there is still a hard drive Bay this says two Thunderbolt three ports zone backlit keyboard not perky oh well there's that and it competes with the Alienware 17 and the msi Titan bro we're gonna take a look at how it stands against those as well but never when you have killer doubleshot that's the Gigabit Ethernet

2500 and their 1550 eye which is really the same thing as the Intel 95 60 AC wireless module says dual band Wi-Fi editor love an AC fast gigabit and also Bluetooth 5 onboard this has stereo speakers that are pretty loud and full and a subwoofer which is labeled subwoofer on the bottom speaking of the bottom it has these little hot warning things as if it was a cup of coffee or something like that don't worry about that you know I don't know what they do that honestly because this is a big chassis gaming laptop and what that means is even if your core

Temperatures are kind of high the surfaces are not hot they don't even get close to human body temperature which means it won't feel hot it'll feel warm to us like 83 Fahrenheit which is around 28 centigrade so you could use this on your lap if your legs don't fall asleep the display on this I have no complaints at all I mean some of you might want 4k if you're buying one of these for content production and not just for gaming but 1080p is still pretty much a sweet spot with 1070 GPU inside you're gonna get high frame rates and since this is 144 Hertz fast refresh that's

Like no problems I'm playing far cry 5 on high and I'm getting 123 frames per second so I'm not over running the display panel on this its IPs you have wide viewing angles this is a plus compared to some manufacturers or a still occasion using TN panels for their fast refresh displays MSI does this Alienware does that and you'll notice a lot of color shift on those which I find annoying and contrast not being as awesome off angle viewing that whole kind of thing so no complaints it's not the brightest display often the premium gaming laptop segment we had 300 nits

Which might be too bright for your man or woman cave when you're gaming gaming honestly but it doesn't fall that far short you can see the metrics on screen now in terms of color representation it does the near-full srgb that we've come to expect than 76% of Adobe so it's all good there and I didn't see any evidence of ghosting when playing games so it's all good Acer predator track fairs are among my favorite I mean it's like using a premium ultra book kind of experience their tracking is reliable smooth accurate gestures all that sort of thing

Primo and it has those nice soft touch buttons on the trackpad which I prefer so I don't feel like my thumb joint is gonna dislocate but the real star of the show here is the keyboard the zone backlighting with the macro keys that's nice unless it's perky or GB people don't get super duper excited about that it's fully programmable them but the feel of the keyboard it feels like one of the the quieter touch mechanical keyboards you know the quieter cherry switches it has a definite tactile click about 1.5 millimeters or travel every key is just scrumptious when you type on

It crisp precise feedback that a little bit of clack e sound listen to this it's nice right without being too clackity clackity clack drive everybody crazy luck it just spoiled me for other keyboards on any other laptop honestly I would just like to type on this all day and all night long obviously it's good for gaming as well because you want that precision you want that tactile feel now when it comes to upgrading and internals on this it's the passive aggressive approach as I like to call it Haley where does this Acer's been doing this so they have a easy access door so you

Can get to your SSD you can get to your hard drive you can get to two out of four of the RAM slots and that's pretty much it if you want to get to the fans to clean them out if you want to replace them it requires completely removing the bottom panel which is more elaborate than usual it's not just like you know eight screws on the corners or something there's all sorts of screws that you can see that are on the inner frame so it's a lot there to remove and then to pry off that plastic bottom on it so that's why I call it passive aggressive it's easy to a point but not for the full

Monty for you power users who might really want to take the thing apart and do some tweaking on it like I said surface temperatures on this are not an issue whatsoever usually they aren't on really big chassis gaming laptops and with Intel eighth generation 6 core CPUs running so hot that's nice that's one of the selling points so for these big chassis it isn't the big bezels the thing that sits on your desk that's attractive here it's how cool and efficient it runs that said the core temperatures on this will still get out there I know there are some reviews that

Say oh achieve this thing runs cool but you can see how hot it got running The Witcher for example those core temperatures still will get up there into the upper 80s to 90s and that's without overclocking this being a core I 9 that we have it is overclockable as well and this is just running on the normal default settings this is not in the super performance mode because you have several options inside of a sirs software overlay it's called quarter master now for things to be predator sense that you can control things like your fans you can do easy overclocking

Without jumping into BIOS you can program your backlighting on the keyboard all sorts and stuff like that so core temperatures are also a bit uneven I'm betting there's a tripod heatsink under there we did not completely dismantle it to take a look at it but that's usually why you see uneven core temperatures something I'm afraid there's still no escaping the heat of the intel 6 core 45 watt CPU that's used in gaming laptops that said this one still runs cooler than the competing Alienware 17 with core i9 that we have granted them as a GTX 1080 so

It's developing even more internal heat on it but that one would actually thermal throttle where this one would be in the low 90s 93 and sometimes it would get a bit higher you know the Alienware often would hit thermal max of 100 degrees centigrade and have to throttle down so that's a good thing and you can use the the cooler boot the boosting fan settings on this thing so it'll be loud but it will run cooler the default fan settings on this are not egregiously loud you're certainly going to hear them it's a gaming laptop but it's they're big fans so it's a kind of whoosh and

Not I'm yeah kind of so you know it's not gonna drive you crazy I could certainly play games without putting headphones on let's put it that way battery life is not why you're gonna buy this I don't think many people by giant desktop replacement gaming laptops for their amazing battery life because they just don't have it alien where is one of the few with their giant battery inside that can if you get them all with switchable graphics this does not have switchable graphics that's why the battery life is an estimated 5 hours by

The manufacturer and you know manufacturers are optimistic so expect two and a half to three doing average productivity work not gaming expect 45 minutes if you are gaming so it's running on that gtx 1070 dedicated graphics all the time oh well battery capacity is 74 watt hour which isn't impressive considering our razor blade 15 which is a much smaller device because a 80 watt hour battery and rarely wears in the upper 90s for their battery capacity so you get the idea here you're not buying it for the battery life the power supply is

Interesting with this one you should wait you get a gtx 1018 you get that big honker 330 watt power supply that every brand is using it's funny you get an MSI you get an alienware you get anything it's the same power supply so I'm guessing the reason they did that is because this is overclockable to make sure you have plenty of power available if you are overclocking so that will never be an issue that part it's nice if you get the regular Core i7 model then you get a smaller 230 watt power brick if you get the AMD rising 7 model you're still gonna get that 330 watt power

Brick so why buy this one you have your choice of several different big honking gaming laptops in the expensive price range and this is certainly a premium product well the keyboard is certainly a selling point the fact that is 144 Hertz IPS display is nice for those viewing angles the trackpad on this is better than average the cooling on it is pretty good now MSI with the Titan Pro puts up some good contention here keyboards good on that one too but not as amazing the trackpad on that is matte cooling on the MSI it's still the best in the business and I think it's super duper tall that's

Like double height kind of tall that's the drawback there but they're doing some good things in MSI as well now with the Alienware 17 that's the sexy one the one that looks kind of thin even though it's still pretty thick but it's got a sleek unique look to it that one runs pretty hot that's that's the big problem there and it's a pretty good keyboard again nothing is gonna beat this particular Acer keyword with that mechanical kind of feel on it with Alienware what's nice is you have your choice of many different configurations and different price ranges where does

This one is slotted into a narrow segment because Acer has other products other Helios lines that you can choose from if you want to spend less money for example so it's not an easy decision really aesthetics again Alienware and if you just care about the cooling and bat more than anything else I would say MSI if you're looking for that rock and keyboard a fast refresh display and pretty decent cooling Acer has got it in the middle it's tough being middle child isn't it so I like the predator Helios 500 a lot the keyboard on this is to die for it's dreamy if

You're actually buying this to type on as well as just uses a gaming laptop which I think many people are are wine not just buy a game console I suppose right and also even if you are gaming that kind of mechanical sort of feel to the keyboard is just nice the trackpad on this unlike most gaming laptops doesn't suck it's really actually very good the 144 words despite is the thing these days the fast refresh display and I'm glad it's IPS looking at Alienware and they're still doing TN panels for some of their offerings and even MSI IPS is

Better viewing angles without that color shift and all that sort of thing it certainly is a big chassis it has big bezels all those usual things with the big desktop replacement gaming laptop but the upside is it runs relatively cool you can put it on your lap and on the fact your legs might fall asleep from the weight they won't get burnt I music from mobile tech review be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more cool tech videos and thumbs up if you like this vid
