72 Hours with the Essential Phone Review! (With Camera Samples)

by birtanpublished on September 27, 2020

What's up everybody this is Danny and I'm in New York City this week checking out a ton of new phones coming up and the first stop was at essential where I was able to get hands-on time with the phone see some familiar faces and I was super excited because I was able to take

One home with me and use it for a few days and now I'm ready to share my experience with you guys there are some things that I absolutely love about this phone and some things that I don't like so let's get right into it

The unboxing experience is pretty standard you get the phone itself a nice braided USB type-c cord a braided USB c2 3.5 millimeter adapter because this phone does not have a headphone jack and a 27 watt fast charging break that is

Made of metal and has nice edging to it this is a nice touch so the first thing that you should know is that this is a solid phone it's a lot heavier than you would think when you're holding it the mixture of the titanium body and the

Ceramic back feel super premium and I love the size of this phone it feels compact even though it has a large 5.7 inch display it's very manageable and it's refreshing to have a little bit of a thicker phone with sharper edges no

Significant curves the design might be plain for some since it has no branding or anything on the back it's just simple and minimal but I'm digging it the ceramic does feel a little bit slippery and you can get a lot of fingerprints on

It so I'll probably throw a deep brand skin on it to give it some more grip the power button is on the right side along with the volume rockers up and down above it no complaints about that I like the positions of them the buttons

Feel tactile there's a USB C port on the bottom with fast charging a SIM card tray and a single speaker and that's really it there is no SD card slot but you do get 128 gigabytes of internal storage so that should be enough for

Most people but with the ceramic back I thought wireless charging would be supported right out of the box but I think you'll need a wireless charging dock when that is released there's a fingerprint scanner on the back and the

Placement is perfect it works fast and there are two power pins on the top right giving you the ability to wirelessly attach modular accessories like this 360 camera at first I thought this display would

Bother me because of a notch around the front-facing camera but it actually doesn't bother me at all I mean I love the modern bezel islook I think the Android UI fits perfect with this and it does not affect the usage or experience

At all across all stock apps it runs all the way to the top but on most third-party apps and when you are playing video that portion of the displays and use so it's not awkward looking I think this is implemented well

The software is also how I like it basically stock Android there's zero bloat where you basically download what you want some people might not like it because you don't get any added value but this is kind of how I like my phones

I just want to add whatever I want to it this should make getting android 8.0 fairly fast on this phone and that's one of the selling points of the essential phone with the snapdragon 835 and 4 gigabytes of ram it seems very

Responsive fluid animations it is a 5.7 inch LCD display but looks very nice to me sharp with this 2560 by 1312 resolution now I personally am a fan of the AMOLED display but this looks damn good the big downside is that the

Outdoor visibility isn't the greatest and the screen is pretty reflective I don't think it's a deal-breaker but you should be aware of it the cameras on the back are dual 13 megapixel sensors with one being a monochrome sensor so you can

Get amazing black-and-white pictures like this out of it I am a fan of monochrome pictures but I know some people don't like them so I'm sure this will be debated whether it should have been a telephoto lens or not but in

Theory these two sensors should work together to give you the best contrast and color information I took a ton of pictures and in good lighting the images look nice flatter on the colors that normal shots until you use HDR then you

Get some better saturation the dynamic range isn't the best that I've seen but it's still early and the software could improve this in the future right now in its current state the low-light isn't the greatest there's a lot of visible

Noise I'm actually getting better results using a third-party camera app and I will follow up with more in the full review but I wanted to show you a few shots with the camera so you'll know what to expect when you buy an essential

Phone in fact I'm gonna do a separate video on the camera so I'll leave that link down below there are a few things missing from this phone though and some of you might agree or disagree but a phone of

This price I feel should be water-resistant most flagships now come with this feature and I think this is a major omission and could be a deal-breaker for something also there is no headphone jack and I know that it's

The future and Wireless is getting better but I don't know I still miss the headphone jack on my iPhone 2 so I find it essential to have a headphone jack even if they give you a dongle you can lose it or forget it at home you know

The drill with that I also feel like the dual speaker setup would have been nice even though the single speaker gets to a decent volume but you can cover it up pretty easily besides that I think the essential phone looks promising I can't

Wait to spend some more time with it I think personally it's being released at the wrong time the note 8 is here new pixel 2 and XL new iPhones LG v 30 this phone could get lost in that mix and just fade away

I hope not though I want to see succeed even though it has a hefty $700 price tag but this connector on the back with the ability to add on to your phone with new accessories could give you better longevity they are promising a ton of

New things coming up for the future with this phone so let's see what happens let me know what you guys think is this your next phone or is it doomed from launch comment on how you feel about this phone and I'm sure we'll have

A good debate there hit that like button if you enjoyed this subscribe for a ton more new smartphone coverage and I will see you guys in the next one
