4K vs. 8K: Samsung Q90R vs Q900 | What’s the difference?

by birtanpublished on May 8, 2021

Today we're gonna have a little bit of fun I mean we have fun like every week but today it's gonna be a little bit different because we're gonna do something we've never done before we're gonna do a TV comparison pretty much like live that is to say that I have not looked at these TVs against each other so what I'm discovering you're discovering at pretty much the same time in this video we're gonna do it as we go it's gonna be super fun over my right shoulder is the 8k Samsung q 900 are over my left is the 4k samsung q 90 are they're both 65 inches and that's where things get a little bit interesting

Right because a lot of people have said myself included that 8k doesn't make a whole lot of sense down at the 65 inch level shooting at the 75 inch level it's that's kind of a question 80 inches definitely I reviewed the 82 inch version of this TV and I definitely think a KA came into play but down at 65 it's a whole different question especially when this TV over here has stuff going on at least on paper that this one doesn't and then there's the price difference the price difference between the two 65 s is about 800 bucks on Amazon right now the price

Difference between the two 75 s is a thousand bucks and the price difference between the 82 inches is 1500 bucks and for some weird reason the q90 4k doesn't come in a 55 this one does which makes even less sense okay so let's start with test patterns and we're gonna breeze through this because I can tell you having done this once before so we could get a side-by-side there is virtually no difference between these TVs either an SDR or HDR the processing appears to be the same the back light is just if effective on both of these the color a little bit of difference in the color

It looks like the out of box the Q 90 looks a little more accurate but the gradient is definitely better on the Q 90 so better on the 4k then on the aka otherwise how it tone maps looks to be exactly the same to the naked eye I mean you would have to measure to figure out a difference between these two TVs peak luminance maybe a little bit higher on the Q 90 but again we have to measure that so subjectively speaking no meaningful difference just from a test pattern perspective okay so here's some real world content 8k YouTube stuff that we've used many times

Before I've seen this a ton I definitely noticed that there's some vertical banding on each of the screens one is a little bit worse than the other I gotta say I notice it more on the 8k TV than I do on the 4k TV in some scenes and then with others not so much the the gray pattern looked better on the the 4k TV everything else here looks almost exactly the same the saturation appears very similar that HDR highlights are being handled in the same way I do want to mention the backlight again appears to be moving in the same way very quick you don't notice it in any way it's very

Very quick so the processing is definitely doing the same job among both TVs but in terms of resolution I think that's really what matters if we take a look at some close-up shots we'll move up closer to the TV here there is no distinguishable difference to the naked eye from a normal seating distance I you know I'm gonna have to take a look at the video footage to see if you can see anything side-by-side when you're super close up because you just can't make that kind of a comparison live but look bottom line is there is no new meaningful difference between these two

TVs not at 65 inches no way so look I guess we could have talked about the differences in design on the TVs but the fact that matter is almost everything else is exactly the same one Kinect Box the remote the user interface it's all the same the only difference is the screen and the ability to process 8k upscale to 8k I would say this not worth the difference in price at 65 inches definitely not you've got to feed this TV 4k to really get the benefit of 8k upscaling for cable it's gonna look exactly the same for the 75 inch I'm gonna say probably not worth the

Difference in price between the 4k and the 8k maybe maybe a visible difference but look we spent hours producing this video you can't tell but like we've been at this getting the perfect distance exact same difference from each TV maintaining our exposure levels and exact focus I mean yeah it would take a lot I don't think it would be worth it though the difference in price for the 75 inch Annette 82 inches now maybe we're talking about something if you're watching you know 4k or maybe even good 1080p content from a blu-ray on an 8k screen at 82 inches maybe you

Could see the difference but is it worth 1,500 bucks to you I mean that's an expensive TV already so maybe 1500 bucks isn't that much in the end regardless this is not about an 8k versus 4k this is about a ke versus 4k at 65 inches definitely not worth the difference in money and I don't think that's ever gonna change I think that we could have this conversation again next year and we probably will but it's not really going to change better conversation would be Hewlett versus OLED culet 8k versus OLED 4k which I know is happening out there certain companies are

Providing TVs to make that happen maybe we'll do that next year we'll see regardless this has been fun I hope you've enjoyed what you saw today folks thanks as always for watching I love doing this stuff for you guys we're getting towards the end of the year getting really excited for CES keep with us and to that end like subscribe hit that notification bell here's two videos we think you might like reviews of the TV's behind me and as always visit Digital Trends calm for the latest tech news and reviews
