four simple knitting steps for newbies 🧶

published on July 8, 2020

My name is Sandra Hatzisand I've been a knitter most of my life, from primary school daysI learned from my mumTo start knitting, weneed to know the four steps, which is the cast on,the knit stitch, or plain knitting, the purl stitch,

And then casting offOnce we know all of these steps,we can do just about anythingSo over the years, I've knittedlots and lots of different things, always wanting a challenge

This little dinosaur, spinosaurus, the fingerless gloves, beanies, washers, the cardigan I'm wearingAnd, of course, tea cosiesWhen we start to learn knitting,we need yarn and needlesThe wool is eight ply and theneedles are four millimetre

They're matched, and that's an averagesize of wool and needleYou don't want somethingtoo fine and fiddlyand you don't want one too bulkybecause the needles are harder to handleFirst of all, we haveto make a first stitchwith a slipknot

I do that by takingthe wool, leave a tail, wind it over my finger twice, lift the first loop over the second, and then lift the second overthe first and off the fingerAnd this is a slipknot, soit can go shorter and longerWe'll start with the wool

End of the yarn, the ball of wool end ofthe yarn, not the tailWe hold the left-handneedle in the left handAnd the left hand somehowsupports that stitch as wellFirst of all, we take theright-hand needle from the leftand put it through that first loop

And under the left-handneedle to form a crossThen we take the wool, bring it underand around the right-hand needleWith the left hand, we canhelp push the needle throughand grab that stitchThen we bring it around andput the left-hand needle under

And then we've got two stitchesThe second time will bea little bit differentWe're going to put the right-hand needlebetweenthe first and the second stitchBut everything else is the same

We've put it between thestitches, we've formed a cross,it's under the left-hand needleWe'll bring the wool aroundand over the right-hand needleHelp by pushing it downand grasp the stitchwith the right-hand needlePull it out,

Twist it around, and put it on the left-hand needleSo now, we're ready to doour first lot of knittingAnd we'll do the knit stitchThere are only two differentstitches in knitting:the knit stitch and the purl stitch

So we're going to takethe right-hand needleOnce again, we're holdingthe stitches and the needle, the left-hand needle in the left handWe're going to put the right-hand needleinto that first loop from the leftand push it under thatneedle to form a cross

Very much similar to what wewere doing with the cast onBring the wool around from underneath, push the needle through, and grab that stitchBut this time, we're going totake it off the needleSo we've knitted one stitch

And we can say "in through the bunny hole, around the big tree, out through the bunny hole, away runs she",which is a childhoodnursery rhyme to help you remember

So we've finished over thereNow we take the needle in theleft hand and turn it around sowhere the long tailleading to the ball is,that's where we start knitting againNow we're going to start the purl stitch, which is the second andlast stitch in knitting

We're going to hold again, hold the knitting or the cast onstitches with the left handon the left-hand needleBring the right-hand needleunder that working woolAnd then we're going tobring the right-hand needleunder that first stitch from the right

So it's pointing up, it'son top of the bottom,left-hand needle, andagain, it forms a crossThen we're going to bring the wool aroundfrom the right to the left, andgrab it with the needle,

Push it with the thumb, and bring it outThen take it off the needleSo we can still do "inthrough the bunny hole, around the big tree, out through the bunny hole, away runs she"

This is the square piece of plain knittingthat I've already finishedAnd I'll use this to show the lastprocess of knitting, which is casting offSo taking the piece ofknitting off the needleswithout all the stitches droppingSo once again, we're holding the knittingand the left-hand needle in the left hand

We're going to take the needlein through the left-hand sideof that first stitch, underthe needle, forming a crossBring the wool around, bringit through, and take it offOne knit stitchTo cast off, we need toknit two knit stitchesWe have two stitches onthe right-hand needle

With the left-hand needle, wetake the point of the needleand put it under that first loopBit difficult, lift it up,and over, and off that needleAnd we're forming anice little chain effectfor the edge of the cast offAnd then for the laststitch, the same thing,

We're going to take that firststitch up, over, and offAnd we're left with one stitchPut the ball of wool through that loopand thenpull itSo now what we do, we'llcut off that thread

And we can run the, boththreads into the knittingand you'd never know whereyou started or finishedOnce you've learned the knit stitch, the purl stitch, casting on, and casting off, there are a few simpleprojects you can make, which are face washers,or you can knit a square pieceof garter stitch fabric,

About that big, which you can then turninto a fingerless gloveThere we goI hope you found thisreasonably simple to pick upand I hope you enjoy your knittingand will be inspired to makeall sorts of wonderful things
