2020 Origin EVO15-S Review – Light, Thin and Fast

by birtanpublished on October 5, 2020

This is lisa from mobile tech review and this is the origin pc evo 15s the 2020 edition of that they've been using that model number for a while now so this is an exceptionally thin and light 15-inch gaming laptop that's also very powerful competes with the msi gs66 stealth for example that level of thinness and lightness and with up to an rtx 2080 super max q and an 8 core i7 inside we're going to look at it now for those who aren't familiar with origin pc they're some of the folks who created

The original alienware before dell bought alienware out and made it their own so they have some experience in doing these things they typically use clevo chassis and then they build them themselves they put all the ram the ssds all that sort of stuff inside and they're put together in america and there have us base 24 7 support phone email all that sort of thing also you can build to order which is not super unusual with gaming laptops these days but not only can you choose

How much ram you want but you can choose the brands and the speeds and the same thing with the ssds speaking of that we have two ram slots and we have two m.2 nvme ssd slots and here so expandable the other upside on this design is it's just absolutely normal you unscrew the phillips head screws on the bottom take off the cover and you have access to everything the socket and wi-fi six intel ax201 card those ram the ssd the battery and the heatsinks and the fan so if you want to re-paste it

Very easy to do these days with things like inverted motherboards and convoluted this and that that stuff's nice price starts around 2073 and for that you get the core i7 dash 10875h that's the 8 core i7 that's the only cpu available with this laptop so it's just going high end there and an rtx 20 70 max q and like a 512 gig ssd and 16 gigs of ram that's gonna cost you around like i said two thousand and seventy three dollars

You can go and configure it up again you can go with that rtx 2080 max q super edition card if you want and for the displays there are three different choices we have the 4k oled display made by samsung the only ones making that display so for those who really liked oled and that was a thing last year and a bit the year before and now a lot of manufacturers are switching back to wide gamut ips if you really wanted all that this is an opportunity for that now it's

Only 60 hertz so for gamers who like really really high frame rates for things like overwatch might not float your boat but they do have 144 hertz and 240 hertz matte ips non-touch display options as well so fast response time displacer the old display is glossy but it's non-touch which is different usually when we see that 4k display use that oled one it was also a touch screen not so here i like the keyboard on this the tactile field the key travel the crispness the

Very bright perky rgb backlighting i like it better than the say the gs66 stealth from msi which has gotten quite short travel and not very tactile in its feel um maybe the alienware m15 r3 would be a good competitor in terms of keyboard tactile feel that is the track pad on this is glass it's very slippery though so i felt a lack of control it's also not really very big i mean it's not tiny but it has dedicated clicky buttons for those who like dedicated clicky buttons

And there is a embedded in the trackpad there is a fingerprint scanner which is kind of a nice touch because you don't often see biometrics with gaming laptops the speakers on this are bad yeah thank god for the headphone jack and bluetooth audio and all that sort of stuff uh they're two very small down firing speakers and they sound thin tinny brash not good stuff there for ports the story is good i mean especially considering that this is a very thin and light

Laptop you've got ethernet you've got hdmi and mini display port out the back along with the power port which i kind of like because it gets those cables out of the way and you've got usb a ports you have one thunderbolt three ports you have a micro sd card slot so and of course the audio jack thank god for that so that that's that's good the chassis is a metal chassis and well you can see it's black it's not bad looking it's um not going to stand out in the crowd but hey they also offer it in a whole bunch

Of colors if you go to their website you can see you can choose from many colors a couple of different prints that sort of stuff so you can make it your own with a variety of price tags depending on how fancy you want to go so in terms of performance and thermals this is where it gets less compelling yeah we have three heat pipes for the cpu and gpu only one of them is shared but they're pretty short pipes so they're not got a lot of room for dissipation

Decent sized fans here not tripod heat sinks which means three screws not one on each corner four screws per so that's always a little less efficient for the pressure the heatsink puts on the cpu and the gpu to cool them down and these days with gaming laptops with intel 10th generation hot hot cpus we often see a lot more than just the cpu and gpu cover the vrms and all that sort of thing you know big metal plates not this pretty small so the thermals on this especially given the fact that it's thin and very light are pretty constrained

Especially when you do things like throw an eight core i7 in here and your choice of the rtx 2070 or 2080 super max q graphics at least they're the max q variant so they don't make as much heat as the full mobile versions but as you might guess it gets loud boy you do hear the fans i mean you might think you left the water running on full blast somewhere level of loudness and the surface temperatures especially because this is a metal chassis get hot the keyboard area gets toasty

But it's not burning hot but the area like a lot of gaming laptops and laptops in general above the keyboard as you get close to the display that gets too hot to touch now out of the box and by the way this is an origin so it comes in a big wooden crate which is kind of cool i suppose out of the box it has their own power profile and that sets the thing pretty much on permanent boost always running at about five 4.5 gigahertz on all cores well you can guess that's pretty darn toasty so i

Actually switched down to just the standard windows balance power profile this one would be a candidate for repasting or liquid metal and definitely you'd want to underclock this one to try to get the heat under control so you could use more of the power that's available to the laptop the laptop has a 73 watt hour battery not super high capacity but then again hey it is pretty thin and light and i've seen worse and they claim up to six hours of runtime on this it does have nvidia optimus so it can switch into greater

Graphics which will help and realistically i've been getting somewhere between four and four and five hours doing very light stuff like social networking surfing the web all that sort of stuff streaming a little netflix you get the idea it comes with an extremely compact power brick which is kind of a selling point 180 watt power adapter which sounds a little low to me but i i haven't seen it draining the battery while gaming so apparently it's adequate so that does keep the load a little lighter you know you get a thin like gaming laptop and then you have a

Brick that weighs as much as an ultrabook and well that wouldn't be ideal with it to take off the bottom cover just unscrew the phillips head screws they're all visible you can see a lot of ventilation going on here that's obviously a good thing including down here and the ssds run over there so they get a little fresh air so either work a guitar pick around pry it from the front or use the suction cup right here it's pretty effective and you can pull this up and very easy to do

And there are internals so ours has a samsung 970 evo plus which is uh the fanciest ssd you can get these days it's fast folks and uh often it runs hot and we don't have a lot of heat absorbing stuff a little over here but still given the ventilation and the fact it's away from anything else hot the ssd temp we're just fine on this when gaming or doing anything else teeny little speaker driver beside it you can see why we're not getting much audio here that is not really a very big

Driver second slot for a second ssd you can order it that way or upgrade it yourself afterwards and we've got our 73 watt hour battery here at front like most laptops socketed wi-fi card again wi-fi six intel ax-201 card and over here are our two ram slots so we've got obviously corsair vengeance here on their website they list 2 400 megahertz and 26 66 mega it's 26 66 megahertz would be standard for this generation of cpu i don't know why 2400 is even an option but well

Pay attention when you order it and here are those heat pipes i was talking about here pretty short so there's not so much they can do in terms of heat dissipation but they do help route the heat to the fans that vent out the side and the rear and our tripod for the cpu and gpu heatsinks right there and not too much else covered which is like i said one of the reasons why this is kind of thermally challenged so that's the origin pc evo 15s the 2020 model with intel

10th gen core i7 8 core inside and high end dedicated graphics like i said the display choices on this is quite nice it's nice that you can still find oled the the keyboard on this i like it a lot and the backlighting certainly is bright if you you know you can adjust it downward but it's nice for those who like it right you have biometrics on board you have a lot of points but the thermals on this that's going to be a challenge to get all the possible performance out of something this powerful but this thin and light
