2020 Dell XPS 15 9500 One Week Later!

by birtanpublished on November 27, 2020

Dyl started shipping their brand-new XPS 15-inch 9500 model one week ago and in that week me mr. Apple fanboy I've been seriously impressed this computer has things that have basically been a dream of mine to get any travel laptop and honestly the performance isn't too bad either so how has it held up after one week let's find out not going to slam it down what's up everyone I'm the everyday deaden if I can figure it out you can figure it out so look straight up my entire workflow right now like as of today is Apple I have an Apple watch I have an iPhone a MacBook and iPad and I Maki everything I do is Apple I say that

Not to brag but I say that to impress upon you how shocking it is to me that this Dell XPS 15 I mean how shocking it's been and how much has impressed me over the last week now today I'm not gonna go too much into technical detail if you want more information on my new functionality of the laptop I'll leave a link in the description of my entire Dell 9500 playlist that will walk you through video editing on this device upgrading it and even what comes in the box what I want to talk about today is what I both really like and what I really dislike after using this as my

Main computer for a week all the videos you've seen edited on the computer this week have been edited in Premiere Pro on the XPS 15 so let's start off with the negatives look we do the same thing for Apple we got to keep it fair if I start off negative with Apple everybody's gonna start off in the negative foot the worst foot the biggest negative of the XPS 15 for me is 100% because of my normal devices its windows and it's not that I dislike Windows I have Windows machines in my house right now for both my gaming rig and my day job I use Windows probably as much if not more

Than I use Mac OS but I love Final Cut Pro X normally on a normal day it's my editing program of choice and I've been using it consistently for two years now and that's what I've been doing to get this content out to you as quickly as possible and unfortunately it's a Mac OS only program there are a few other things functionality wise that I prefer about Mac OS over Windows but this isn't a video comparing the two maybe we'll do a video comparing that in the future leave a comment below if you'd like see that and heck I'm working on getting over this negative right now like I said

Earlier I've been editing on the XPS 15 using Adobe Premiere Pro Gary how's that working out for you I need to invest in a new monitor yeah he's he's fine don't worry about him editing Gary is just that he's just a grumpy person no matter what you're doing the next thing I don't like about the XPS 15 is in its configuration I was looking forward to trying out a touchscreen laptop but if you want touchscreen functionality here you have to pay for the UHD 4k display I'm sure that display is great but I'm okay with saving a little money and battery life

Keeping the 1080p display on this base model much more on this display in a second though so I would prefer a 1080p touchscreen option that could save us from paying $400 for extra resolution I don't really want or need next up is something that I also give Apple a hard time about I do like the Dell has finally put the webcam in a place where it's not looking up your nostril but this is also a 720p camera does that really matter because prior to my three months of working from home that would not have been a big deal to me but with more and more zoom meetings and

Even family gatherings happening over built-in web cameras we need to start making 1080p the standard here 720p is something from way back in the long long ago that we can move on from much like the word tubular and the last real negative I have about the XPS 15 isn't really a problem since you wouldn't be doing this regularly if you do want to upgrade this computer farther down the line like getting the bottom case off of this thing is a huge pain in the butt the first time the screws aren't the issue it's the way the case is seated to the laptop itself you've really got to

Finagle a pry bar in here and it made me terrified the first time I did it it made me terrified that I was gonna break the case or crack this really nice carbon fiber upholstery again you probably wouldn't do this too often and as you do it more it gets easier if you're only gonna do it once to upgrade and fix any small issues that might need to be clean to replace its kind of it is definitely frustrating to make it work that's it but yeah the negatives are out of the way so let's jump straight into my favorite part the things I like because there are so many things that I

Like about this laptop there's so many I'm not exactly sure where to start well let's start with the positives where we with the negatives upgradability you can upgrade components in this laptop what what those of you who are predominantly Windows users or you use machines like this regularly you won't appreciate this as much as a longtime Mac user because we can't upgrade anything you can upgrade both the internal solid-state drives on this and the RAM without any hassle except that first time you're getting the case off heck if I could figure it out in that video you could

Something something something right it's shocked to me that I was able to put in a brand new Samsung Evo 970 plus into one of the two m2 nvme slots and I was able to upgrade the RAM from eight gigabytes to 64 gigabytes for almost half the cost it would have taken to upgrade a macbook pro 16 to do the same I love that I love that and I love that if I want to upgrade again if faster drives come out I can do it again without needing to buy another macbook or sending in my macbook to have Apple do it it's just right here in my hands the power is in my hand so awesome it's

So awesome I could talk about that for a long time the next big thing I like about this computer is the display this is hands-down the best display I've ever seen on a laptop and I don't necessarily mean from a resolution perspective this is a 16 by 10 aspect ratio giving you a little more vertical space here on the bottom that then a more traditional 16 by 9 panel but work aside this thing looks amazing the bezels are almost non-existent and it just lewd fades away like after you've been doing sustained work the bezels seem to fade away in the screen floats in space in front you

Again I do wish the 1080p panel had an option for touchscreen functionality but even without that this is the best the best screen I love when it comes to color accuracy Dell States is equipped with an up to 100% Adobe RGB and 94% DCI p3 color gamut so for us video editing folks you'll get proper looks of your footage right on this thing without needing to calibrate it yourself though all I mean all displays will lose their calibration over time and you should periodically calibrate yours if your primary use for these kind of computers is video editing but it's nice to the

Out of the box you can just start working I cannot eh enough good things here I could easily gush over how much I like this display all day long and my wife has heard it for the last week but I won't because there are other things I want to gush about here next up of the things I like is a pretty big deal for me you've heard me go on and on about the Apple magic keyboard so how does Dells option stand up well when I first started typing on this in the unboxing I thought the keys were a little mushy I mean I they felt a little mushy next to

My MacBook Air and my MacBook Pro but after using this for a while now I really like the feel of these keys can you hear them now they don't feel as snappy as the magic keyboard but it feels just as good in a different way it there feels to be more travel in each individual key but the thing is they almost have like a spring-like feel to them so your fingers kind of come up each time a little bit with each press it's barely noticeable but it it feels like you can type faster and with less fatigue because the keyboard is helping you out I don't know if that makes sense

But that's how it feels and I also like how spread out the keyboard is it's just about the perfect size before becoming too big for me I do have to stretch a little bit to get to the T and the Y Keys but everything else it's just gravy and there's no touch bar on it it's all function keys combining with the niceness of the keys is something else that I generally applaud Apple for the XPS 15 has some really really big palm wrists so you can get your whole wrists and hands up on the body of the laptop and this gives you a much more neutral position from which to type the only

Typing issue I really have here is the bottom edge right here is actually kind of sharp so if you're anything then above the laptop you can get some indentations like on your forearms from the body of the laptop another thing to go with the typing face of the laptop this carbon-fiber top feels amazing like this might also be my favorite feeling laptop typing surface I've ever come across except for this dorky intel sticker that I'm definitely gonna be taking off here soon and on that typeface is hands down this is funny this is hands down the

Biggest trackpad that I've ever seen on a Windows laptop this is Apple sized and how much room it takes up and much like the rest of this device it's easily my favorite version of itself on an on Apple laptop that makes sense I do still prefer the MacBook trackpad I mean Apple is currently the king of trackpads and the click experience here is a little mushy coming from that but it's leaps and bounds better than any other Windows trackpad I've ever seen before the gestures are all pretty similar and they work fairly snappy it's nice they got it

To not activate as you're typing your palms brush against it next up to that awesome trackpad is the speakers which again much like other aspects of the design here are really impressive and they're very nice to listen to and I like them much better than the speakers on my macbook pro 13 which yeah I mean it's a bigger computer so it should be better the sound is very clear I mean I'm not an audiophile or anything I just need it to be good enough and these are good enough it's not a little better than good enough the next thing I really like continues to be about the physical

Design of the XPS 15 I love how small this laptop is I have another 15 inch Dell laptop in my house that I use for gaming it's their g3 and it's substantially bigger than the XPS in all dimensions this feels more like a 14 or a big 13 inch laptop then it does a true 15 inch device because of the reduction of the bezels this has a shocking display of engineering on display here pardon the pun here's the thing that I'm most excited about and thankfully it did not disappoint this computer has a full-size SD card slot on it oh that felt really good to say I mean dreams do

Come true look I import terabytes of footage into my computer every week my SD cards get a serious workout and I hain't needing to use a dongle to ingest footage that is one point of failure that will absolutely grind my production to a halt so many things could go wrong with needing a dongle it could break you could lose it it cost more money I just don't like having to use them I'm also happy that the XPS 15 has two Thunderbolt three ports and a USB C port which is great and it's useful because you can do charging on the other side

But I am so happy that this has an SD card slot and I do believe it's UHS – meaning you get faster transfer speeds and it just makes so much sense this makes so much sense like when did making computers smaller and smaller override functional needs if you don't do a lot of video or photo creation you Blee don't care and you don't see what all the fuss is about but this one feature this one feature could sell this computer to a whole wide range of creators looking to produce content on the go I love I love that SD card slot that's a hill I'm willing to die on but

At the end of the day so what right should you get a Dell XPS 15 9500 if you're a Windows user looking for a small but powerful travel workstation yes I can absolutely recommend the XPS 15 it's a fantastic device that pulls off something unique and that it's good in both form and function the display is amazing the body is great SD card slot if you are traditionally a Mac OS user looking for a way out of the dongle life this is a pretty good option you will have to learn some workarounds to traditional Mac OS functionality but I think the performance on hand here is a

Good investment I absolutely unequivocally love this laptop I love it so much that it's got me debating on using this as my primary travel laptop from now on and leaving the Mac books to be comparison fodder and if you liked this video and are as impressed as I am with the ability to upgrade your computer click here for the video where I show just how easy it is to upgrade this laptop to the limit I mean the limit of what you have on hand thanks for watching
