2020 Apple MacBook Air Review

by birtanpublished on November 25, 2020

This position for mobile tech review and this is the 2020 Apple MacBook Air I would say it's the best MacBook Air they've made yet you would hope that's the case would you and because well why bother making a new model so this one has a Retina display so for those who kept your really old MacBook Airs back in the days of the tn display that's a nice upgrade I know some people really held on to their is not only because well laptops are expensive but because a lot of people didn't like the butterfly keyboard which is gone we have the scissor keys which means traditional normal keys with more travel to about a

Millimeter of travel onboard here just like the 16 inch MacBook Pro so it feels just like the 16 inch MacBook Pro keyboard and also a lot like the desktop magic keyboard that you can buy to use with any Mac desktop or laptop good times there we have intel 10th generation ice Lake CPUs inside with intel iris plus graphics for a significant graphics bump apple says up to 80% there and more interestingly and probably like every review you're gonna see you start at the base model with for $9.99 with a core i3 which is a dual-core and I recommend

Spending $100 more if you build to order you can just upgrade the CPU and nothing else hundred dollars get to a quad core i5 obviously for multi-core supporting programs which is most of them these days you're gonna get twice the performance there and that $9.99 price is a little bit of a shock for a laptop as nice as this right Apple is always very expensive but it's not badly configured when you're looking at this versus unlike the Dell XPS 13 an HP Spectre x-360 one of those nice consumer laptops the yoga series or something like that so we're not comparing this to

A gaming laptop done there's always a value proposition with more horsepower for a gaming laptop but among shall we say high-end ultrabooks boutique niche laptops for $9.99 you get that core i3 eight gigs of ram which for Mac OS isn't too bad and a 256 gig nvme SSD if you go to $12.99 which is a configuration that we have and the one I would personally pick and get the core i5 you still have 8 gigs around but you get a 512 gig SSD so you got plenty of room to store stuff we're gonna look at it now so the casing is based on the 2018 MacBook Air last generation basically so not much

Has changed there that means dongle life you have to Thunderbolt three points at least they're both 40 gigabit per second and they do support an e GPU hey we do have a headphone jack USB C charging and we have a touch ID button so you've got fingerprint ID and that uses Apple's t2 chip and of course you have Mac OS 10 Catalina with the usual bundle and actually quite useful apps like pages and keynote and iMovie those sorts of things so out of the box you've got a lot of software that can get you being productive the drawbacks are still no tiny bezels and no touchscreen Apple's

Still going with if you want to touch screen get the iPad or iPad pro instead by the way we'll also be reviewing the iPad pros and that's a whole nother can of worms when the issue shoes an iPad pro or a MacBook Air but what about the 13-inch MacBook Pro while we're talking about your alternatives well that hasn't been refreshed yet but and then rumor is that the 13-inch per minute MacBook Pro might become a 14-inch just like the 15-inch MacBook Pro became a 16 inch MacBook Pro but anyway the the 13-inch isn't much heavier interestingly enough and the footprint is not that much

Different but you do get a lot more processing power there and you get a wider gamut display so there's still selling points for those you who are more power users the MacBook Air is geared towards those who are doing everyday productivity work social networking is streaming media yes you can actually use final cut balance the least painful ever as MacBook Airs go for doing that sort of thing I mean my 16 inch MacBook Pro at the core I know it is about five times faster and well even the 13-inch MacBook Pro is two-and-a-half times faster so if you're

Doing heavier duty things if you are doing 4k video editing for example go for a stronger machine but for most people who are maybe editing drone footage once in a while stuff from their iPhone whatever it's actually pretty fine for that in terms of cooling it does have a fan which you almost never hear now I know there's been some brouhaha and some people are claiming that it runs hot and yeah it's not a gaming laptop it's not designed to be a final cut workstation where you're pushing it that hard all the time but that's said I haven't seen any

Temperature problems with this unplugged idles at around 35 degrees centigrade which is perfectly normal amongst all laptops it's quite good plugged in you can go up to 40 centigrade depending how much it's charging using web browsing as a test and running on pages document that sort of thing it's usually you know at about 50 centigrade if I'm doing final cut and I'll go up there to the 70s and 80s and might even push 90 but that's to be expected that's gonna happen even with a more powerful laptop like the 16 inch so I'm not seeing any problems honestly

With thermals especially using it in the way it's intended to be used now these are lower power CPUs 9 to 10 watts versus use typical ultrabook CPU that's 15 watts and the 28 watt CPU Apple usually uses in their 13 inch line so that tells you there's a performance difference and also heat difference less Watts cool and running we have RAM soldered on board and you can get with either 8 or 16 gigs of low-power ddr4 Ram and that's 37 33 megahertz you have an nvme SSD also so soldered on board you can order it with up to 2 terabytes of storage which for their entry-level

Machine is quite a lot of storage we have y55 here not y56 yet although most people don't have Wi-Fi 6 routers it might be nice to be a future-proof and we have bluetooth 5 on board for the display it is a Retina display and the resolution on it's not too bad you can see the specs on screen right now for that 16 by 10 aspect ratio I know a lot of people appreciate them and it's a good display but it's your typical full srgb coverage display it's not as wide gamut as a 13-inch MacBook Pro or the 16 inch MacBook Pro are the nice or high-end iMac so which is fair this is

Their least expensive laptop its pleasant to look at it's glossy but not overly reflective it's fine honestly display brightness is good by the way 354 nits so Apple has definitely improved brightness for the air as well thanks to the own horse power on the iris plus graphics this can drive one 6 K or a 5 K monitor are two 4k monitors at 60 Hertz pretty powerful for a little guy so good that it still has a 720p FaceTime HD camera which is a potato camera just about it's okay it's not great I really wish they would upgrade and nowadays suddenly were all videoing

Each other instead of meeting face to face it would be even nice as always Apple does a really good job at speakers this might be obviously not as good as the 16 inch MacBook Pro which is a real benchmark for laptop speakers but this is pretty loud full and rich I mean even Apple's 12-inch MacBook really punched above its weight for sound so it's very pleasant to listen to it has a forty nine point nine watt hour battery it makes you wonder couldn't they squeeze one little point one watt hour in there and so they can say what you see watt hour anyway that's a pretty

Beefy battery that we usually see with regular ultrabooks a 15 watt CPUs as you might imagine battery life is very good here I averaged about nine hours with brightness set at 150 nits and doing mixed productivity work some social networking a little streaming video a little bit of Photoshop if you're gonna be pushing it hard and doing more demanding tasks or playing some games on it obviously your very life won't be as good likewise if you decide to boot camp and put windows on it battery life is never as optimized under windows as it is Mac OS now the 30 watt

Very compact charger in the box with a 2 meter which is about 6 foot USBC cable for charging so that's a 2020 MacBook Air and you know I actually would recommend this one if you're into mac OS if you like the giant Trackman if you liked the 16 by 10 aspect ratio if you're an eye thing owner and the synergy is always excellent between this and iPads and iPhones and all that sort of thing obviously there are a lot of windows ultra books out there if you have any particular one you really want to see smack down with this one just let me know in the comments only super
