published on July 20, 2020

– We've shown you how to clean many hotspots in your home Floors, windows, mirrors, and all kinds of other things But there's a ton of items you might be forgetting to clean or at least not cleaning them as often as you should be Today we'll address some of those neglected areas and offer a cleaning solution for each of them

(techno music) When cleaning your toilet, make sure you aren't only cleaning the obviously dirty parts We all know to clean the seat and bowl, but don't forget to drop the base to clean the base The exterior of your toilet can get

Just as germy and dusty as the interior Be sure to clean the top lid and tank itself The top of the seat, lower base, oh and most importantly, don't forget to use a disinfectant wipe on the handle Everyone touches them before washing their hands

So they're a sanctuary for germs As a side note, always put the lid down before you flush to avoid a toilet flume This cause micro organisms to become airborne and potentially settle in your sink, on your toothbrush, or maybe even on your hands

It should really come as no surprise that electronics hide hazardous bacteria too Keyboards, mice, trackpads, and phones are just a few examples that get touched frequently and often get shared between family members A simple disinfecting wipe will actually help kill

All that dangerous bacteria and keep your electronics safe with regular cleaning and handwashing Now here's one that you might not even be thinking about, your television remote control This thing is constantly being exposed to germs from your hands which means you'll want

To disinfect it at least once a month if not more frequently Start by removing the batteries from the back of the controller to avoid damaging any circuits For a quick surface cleaning, dip a cloth into rubbing alcohol and wipe it down

Now for a more in-depth cleaning, use an alcohol soaked Q-tip and carefully clean the crevices around the buttons where the cloth can't easily reach If there's any gunk wedged inside the buttons or along the seam, use a toothpick and get it out of there Once your remote's dry, reinstall those batteries

And your disinfected remote is ready to navigate your television Dishwasher handles get touched every time they're used So be sure to start here and clean that first A dishwashers primary function is to clean, but if it's neglected, it'll end up smelling more

Like a sewer than a cleaning device Pull out the bottom rack and sprinkle one cup of baking soda across the bottom For added measure, place a glass on the top rack and pour in one cup of distilled vinegar Carefully push the rack back in and close that door

If your dishwasher doesn't have a hot start option, run the water in the kitchen faucet until it's hot Then turn off the tap Now run a heavy cleaning cycle By the end, your dishwasher should be fresh and sparkly clean

Every day door handles are often hotspots for bacteria, especially in high-traffic areas Door handles are the most commonly touched surfaces in your home so you know that bacteria can be easily transferred from person to person this way Depending on the conditions, bacteria can thrive

Anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks Because of the frequent inevitable use of most door handles, it's best to clean them as often as possible Use a disinfectant cleaner and some paper towels to wipe down the handles and reduce the spread

Of germs in your home This is especially important if somebody just got over an illness or is currently sick Commonly touched areas like refrigerator door's handles test positive about 40% of the time for rhinovirus, and that's what causes about half of all colds

No one likes the idea of cleaning dishes with a germy sponge, and if you do, let us know in the comments 'cause I want to talk to you This is why we all know we should be cleaning ours on a regular basis If you really want to decontaminate those sponges

And not just clean them, your microwave is an effective way of protecting your family, yourself, or maybe even the dish burglar who breaks into your house just to clean your dishes Start by saturating a sponge in water and placing it directly into your microwave

Two minutes at full power will kill more than 99% of all living germs in the bacterial spores of the sponges This of course includes E Coli which can cause major illnesses Be sure to let your sponge cool down

Before moving it from the microwave because otherwise you might burn your hand In case you didn't know, it's recommended that you change your HVAC filters every 90 days for an average suburban home, but it really depends on the filters you buy and the number of people

Or pets that are occupying your home If you don't calculate this correctly, your filters may end up looking like this If you have a cat or dog, your air filters should be changed every 60 days If you have multiple pets or allergies,

Your air filters should be changed every 20 to 45 days It just kind of depends how you feel so sniff it out Always be sure to buy the air filters that are most suitable for your home

And set reminders to ensure that you change them as frequently as needed So if you've lost a little pep in your step lately, check those filters and ensure that's not the culprit Salt and pepper shakers can be ground zero for germ activity and they're sitting right there

On your dining room table Research indicates that salt and pepper shakers have the highest concentration of cold and flu viruses in your entire home But you can battle bacteria growth on your shakers by wiping them down each night

As you clean off the table We also suggest giving them a deep clean every couple months You can do this by emptying the shakers out by soaking them all in hot water Make sure to use antibacterial soap

And let it sit for about 10 minutes Rinse them and dry them with a hand towel Now obviously for faster drying, you can use a hair dryer until no moisture remains Then go ahead and refill them Now this one probably goes without saying,

But we're gonna mention it anyway Even your innocent looking light switches are absolutely covered in bacteria Now this makes perfect sense if you think about it You pick up bacteria from every surface you touch, especially in the bathroom

So when you walk around the house and flip those switches on and off, you're just transferring germs around So next time you're doing a little house cleaning, don't forget those switches Just given them a quick wipe down

And go about your business With all the food waste garbage disposals handle, there can only be some nasty stuff lurking down there To keep yours clean and smelling fresh, it just takes a little maintenance once or twice a week

Start by turning on your cold water and then your garbage disposal Now slowly feed in several handfuls of ice cubes As the disposal grinds up the cubes, the abrasive chunks help clean the blades You can also feed in lemon peels or pour in some

Lemon juice as a nice deodorizer But whatever you do, never let food sit in there Just keep it flushed regularly If you enjoyed these tips, let us know by hitting that thumbs up button or by leaving a comment Good, bad, or dirty, they're all inspiring
