1 Power Tool to Customize Android Smartphones – Nova Launcher

by birtanpublished on November 28, 2020

whether you're new to Android or not if you're new to Android customization this is the only video you're gonna need and one tool to go with it the nova launcher i'll take you step-by-step on pretty much everything you can do with nova launcher and be able to achieve a customized look that you're happy with and can change everyday as and when you wish after you launch an install press the home button tap nova and then select always that's an important step now at first it's going to be empty and you may have to remove certain homescreen pages so just

Long press and remove after that go into the app drawer and long press on apps that you use the most and bring them out on the home screen try to place icons that you use the most on the right side if you're a right-handed person and now you're all set to customize which actually starts by going into nova settings which is where all the magic happens so long press on an empty area on your home screen and then go into settings go into your home screen and this is where you can change the grid size so right now you're limited to four or five icons in a row you can actually

Change that all the way to a 12 by 12 grid which means a hundred and forty-four icons but that's going to be quite crazy and unusable so let's be a little sane and probably end up at an 8×8 grid which means I can have eight icons in one row as you can see I already did have five and I have space for three more so I can just drag those out but now these icons are way too close to each other and I may accidentally click on another icon so I can quickly restructure that and have better spacing so I still have an 8×8 grid but with some space in between the

Icons and now comes my favorite part which is tiling your icons so go into settings look and feel and then icon style tap into icon themes and you will see a list of icon packs that I have downloaded from the Play Store some of these are free some are paid but there are some really good ones for example these that I'm showing I'll be leaving links to my favorite icon FAQs in the description below so feel free to check those out and definitely install them after you're done installing you will see those icon packs appear here and you can just select one of those and you

Will see that the app icons instantly change their styling and while you've only changed the icon theme you could go back into home screen settings and then go into I can layout to play with those icon sizes and shapes even more you can change the icon size so you can have smaller icon sizes or bigger let's make them smaller for now and you can choose to turn off icon labels because you know what you've put and suddenly you've got this slightly more minimal look which looks great and of course there is now no limit to how many times you want to change an icon

Pack all you have to do is go into look and feel into icon style and then just change the icon theme and now let's talk about this dock at the bottom which has four or five or three icons go into home screen settings then tap into dock first of all you can completely disable it if you don't want it so it's completely gone and gives you more real estate let's say you don't want five you want lesser icons or you want all the way to seven icons and you don't want just one set of docks you want two docks or three docks you can do that and now you have one dock that has seven icons and then

You can slide to another dock with another set of seven icons I mean if you really wanted you can do it and now let's talk about this persistent search bar on the top go into home screen then into search you'll see that there's a search bar placement make that into a widget and then go into the style and now you can have all of these options and you can select one depending on which one you like you can change the color also so let's say a white one might look better and you know puncher on this pink background but you can change the kind of icon and style you

Want to match your preference now this is all assuming you have only one home screen and if you slide left or right there are no more but you can pinch and zoom and add a new home screen of course all the settings that you have for home screen would apply to the second home screen as well also you can drag one icon and drop it on top of another to create a folder and then you can have different folder preferences so go into settings go into folders and now you can change how your folders look do you want them to appear as a grid as a stack or in a fan style up to you when it opens

Up how do you want it to look do you like a gray background or do you want like a different colored background you could go into folder styling and change the background color to let's say a purple and now if you go outside and you open the folder you'll see a different look and here is an additional tip if you long press on an app icon and then tap on this pencil icon here you can do some amazing stuff first of all you can assign that app icon and icon from any of the icon pack so it will override the icon pack that you have installed or applied which is phenomenal and then you

Can change the app label as well so you don't have to stick to what the app name really is you can change it to your name if you want and you can have a different swipe action when when you swipe that icon so for example I said that to search now if I swipe up on the app I could it will do something else so tapping it obviously launches the app but swiping on it opens up whatever you have defined also if you long press on an icon it will give you access to its widgets if you tap on the widgets option so let's say for google key tap on the widgets and those are the widgets and

That's pretty much how you can customize your homescreen in all possible ways and by the way your homescreen is the first screen you always see when you unlock your phone so you might as well make it as usable as you can by putting in stuff that you need the most and you don't have to go to the app drawer or to your system notification tray for anything else but you can customize your app drawer as well change the background colors have tabs or pages corresponding to specific names change the grid size to accommodate for more icons or less icons just like on the home screen so

Going to nova settings go into app drawer and that's pretty much what you have to do now to be able to access all app drawer settings you can change the grid size as you wanted you can change the icon styling just the way you can do for homescreen you know you can change the size of the icons choose to have the label on or off and of course the background color as I just showed you let's say I make it blue and then there you go it's blue you can even change the transparency of this blue color so if you want more of your background the wallpaper to be visible you can do

That again just a piece of customization advice if you need it now the default is all icons are stacked vertically but I can have a list style and I can have a horizontal card style if I want it just going to app drawer and then change the app drawer style to whatever you like and within your app drawer you can also create tabs so for example I've got apps I've got social and then I've got the search icon and a Play Store icon social tabs has icons corresponding to social apps to do that go into app drawer change top bar to tab bar and then go all the way down to draw groups and here

Slide over to tabs and now you can create your tab or edit your tabs so to create a tab just tap on the plus icon and you can create a new tab let's say that I create something called as ordering where I can place my food order icons or apps right there now if you see there is a scroll bar on the right which has a yellow accent which by the way looks really good on pink but if I want I can go and change that also so going to app drawer scroll all the way down to scroll accent color just imagine the level of customization that Nova offers and now you've got this nice blue green

Accent color now this is pretty much what you get in the free version of Nova Launcher which i think is quite comprehensive I mean the sheer number of ways you can customize your home screen and app screen in the free version of Nova is quite insane but the paid version gets you a couple of extra features for example you can have notification badges for unread stuff you know you can place where you want your badges to be you can choose whether you want numeric dots to indicate how many unread things are there change the size change the color change the shape of all

Of that yeah I mean it's too intricate but it's there you also get access to gestures which is crazy great you can launch apps shortcuts or perform system settings like turning off your screen just by gestures so you can go into gestures and inputs and you can config about ten gestures I think if I'm not wrong or maybe twelve and you can launch pretty much any system setting or any app that you have installed on your phone or even shortcuts you know for example if you want to dial someone or you want directions to home or you want to directly open a Google Drive folder I

Mean you can configure all of that with just gestures so you never have to go inside the app ever now while all of this may sound a lot but let me just repeat the process for you let's say I apply a new wallpaper and now as you can see I have a little difficulty reading the top because it's all white and the wallpaper is also white I can go in to look and feel change to dark icons and now if I go I'll see that you know the icons are darker so Nova has paid attention to even the tiniest of things my app icons were white if you remember that's not going to work here so I can

Go into icon theme and pick up a different icon pack and there you go it's it's as simple as that of course my widget is white – it's a little less readable I can just change the position and I'm all set with a new look my go-to apps for wallpapers are wall rod and crisper so definitely give them a try and that's it on the Nova Launcher I've tried to explain pretty much everything you can do with Nova to be able to customize your homescreen and your AB drawer I may have left a few features off but that's because I think they may not be as useful to majority of you and
